The Family tradition began in 1910 when Miguel Lebrija (first Mexican pilot to fly over the national territory and had the first altitude and longest flying time records with his Bleriot airplane), founded the Company called The Tethered Balloon, S.A and brought to Mexico a Hot air balloon and named it “Ciudad de Mexico” which means Mexico City. This was an attraction in Mexico City and carried between twelve and twenty passengers. Following his steps, Alberto Braniff, in 1014 brought a Hot air balloon from France. In this balloon, the aviation passionate and the first Mexican balloon maker, Joaquin de la Cantolla y Rico made his last flight. At the age of seventy Joaquin told Braniff: "I don`t want to die without feeling the emotion of flying in a modern balloon like yours, if you grant me this pleasure, I will be the happiest man in Earth. I am old and have hurt myself several times. But I am very fond of flying" (Ing. José Villela Gómez, Breve historia de la Aviación en México, pag. 51) And that is how they agreed to fly the following Sunday. They launched from the main street in Mexico City. Following our ancestors legacy, Manuel Lebrija and Alberto Braniff, we began in the seventies with aerial advertising on hot air balloons and pulling signs with airplanes. Some years after, there was a small recess, not to change the line business, but only to change the size of the aircraft Hercules C-130, DC-8, DC-7, Boeing 707, Convair). Finally, in 2000 we came back to ballooning. In 2006 the first rally took place in La Laguna, 1º FESTIVAL INTERNAICONAL DE GLOBOS, “EN LA LAGUNA” gathering over 250,000 spectators. In 2007 we expanded to Aguascalientes city, having then two rallies in one year and in 2008 balloons were flying over Saltillo`s sky.
Now, in 2010, we have made one rally out of two, so we will only be celebrating the 1st INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL AND THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY in CuatroCienegasCity. The reason is that CuatroCiénegas is a touristic area combined with the fact that it is a natural reserve, and in October the Monarch butterfly migration takes place through this area on their way to the Woods in Center Mexico, so the expectations for this rally are much bigger. Pilots and spectators will have the privilege to view Monarch Butterflies flying among the Hot air balloons. This is the time of year that migration takes places and these beautiful creatures fly from Canada to the southern Mexico, crossing through CuatroCiénegas. We have had 10 countries assisting these festivals from Europe and North America: Mexico, Austria, Canada, Slovenia, Spain, USA, United Kingdom, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine History will continue as long as we remain astonished and ballooning expectation grows, year by year, to transform the sky. |
